Senior Awards Summa Cum Laude Awards Science Fair: Junior Samantha O'Neill earned a 3rd place award in the Engineering category. Junior Dan Wisniewski and Senior Mittra Sharif each earned a 3rd place award in the Health Medicine category Senior Megan Cochran earned a 2nd place award in the Health Medicine category Senior Kristen Welch earned a 2nd place award in the Engineering category Senior Allison Blatz earned a 1st place award in the Health Medicine category On March 18th at the Akron science fair, Mentor was recognized as the best school of them all with six qualifying students.Senior Tessie Panthani earned a 1st place award in the Environmental science category Tessi Panthani won first in Enviornmental Science. Mittra Sarif was first in Medicine for her project on Alzheimer's. Kristin Welch was third in Engineering for her Solar Distiller. Kristin Welch and Tessi won the Governor's Awards. Dan Wisniewski won the statistics award from the American Society for Quality. Dan and Mittra won monetary awards for their projects on Alzheimers. Decathalon: On March 11 at Hiram College, the Mentor Academic Decathlon team won the state title in the novice division, outscoring Lake Catholic, Shaker Heights, Riverside, Bedford and Maple Heights. The team also was 3rd overall in the superquiz.The team consists of: Captain Laura Pearce, Eric Estadt, Tom Rist, Brian Harding, Aaron Vilk, Matt Oatman and Bill Mattingly. At-large gold medal-winners were Tom Szucs (pronounced ZUKES) and George Maksimov. Zach Poole also scored well. Of note are Laura Pearce, scoring 5,935 points to lead the team; Brian Harding, with a state-first score of 772.2 on the math test. Matt Oatman won seven medals, including five golds in the Varsity division, and Bill Mattingly also grabbed a gold. In the scholastic division, Laura Pearce won six golds and seven total, Tom Rist won five medals; and in the honors division, Eric Estadt and Brian Harding were gold medalists.
