Prison on Lake Erie

The order was given to start a federal POW camp on October 3, 1861. The order was given to the commissionary-general of prisoners, William Hoffman. The prison was to be located at Johnson's Island off the coast of Sandusky by Kelley's Island.

It was in full operation by December of 1863.

After the war, the prison was abandoned, and November 7, 1865 started a long series of property sales on Johnson's Island.
