Rewards and Time Home

Money - The men were paid a monthly salary to be in the army. A paymaster came to the camp during the month and paid all of the soldiers. The salary was not much, usually around ten dollars. Most men sent some of this money to their families back home and used the rest to buy needed supplies such as ink or paper, when they were in a town.

Home - Some men were allowed furloughs during the war (a period of time used to go home, usually lasting about thirty days).
