Renaissance Program Overview
The Renaissance Program has been a part of Mentor High School's recognition of outstanding students since 1993. Each year students are recognized for their academic achievement, their positive attitude, and their attendance. This program allows the school to reward students with more than just a pat on the back for their efforts.

This national movement initiated by the Jostens' Corp. and locally supported by Rotary of Lake County encourages schools, local businesses, and community organizations to encourage students to "soar to their highest potential". As you will see, the attendance and the attitude of the students play as big a role as grades in receiving recognition.

The recognition comes in the form of a "Renaissance Card". The "Renaissance Card" includes discounts, rewards, or free food items from area businesses. Also, students receive discount coupons or free treats when the cards are distributed.

Recognition Levels

The number of student recognized at each level varies but approximate numbers per grade level are:

Category Students Requirements
Best of the Best 10-20 No tardies or absences
No referrals
All A's
Silver Card 150 Three excused tardies or absences
No referrals
3.8 or better GPA
Scarlet Card 250 Three excused tardies or absences
No referrals
3.5 or better GPA; or a .33 improvement from one nine weeks to the next with no F's

Supporting the Program
Each year we request corporations and businesses to support our efforts to build an incentive program at Mentor High School. This year I am outlining the possible levels of support. I am hoping businesses will see the value in this program and will show their support with a financial donation.

A Breakfast Sponsor
A breakfast sponsor treats the Renaissance students to a continental breakfast at the school. The cost for these breakfasts is usually $200 to $300. It may include a short program and then dismiss to the student center for breakfast.

A Scholarship Sponsor
A scholarship sponsor provides a scholarship for a student attending a two-year college or technical school. When scholarships are available, the Renaissance Program advertises the scholarship for graduating seniors who have worked hard but may not be attending 4 year college. The student need not be a Renaissance recipient to receive the scholarship. Each year a number of scholarships and the amount of the scholarships vary depending on the amount of contributions. Some businesses donate $100 to $150 and these amounts are combined into one or two $400 or $500 scholarships.
