The Mentor Girls' Soccer team won their first playoff game against Madison 9-0. They then advanced to district semis where they played North and won 8-0. The team continued on its winning ways and defeated its rival NDCL, the team who had knocked them out at sectionals last year. The score of that game was 4-0. Goals were scored by Jen Short, Julie Gravangna, Brittany Lawerence. The team now proudly wears the title of district champions. They will now play in the regional semi-final against Warren Howland Wednesday night at 7:00 in Strongsville.

With several Mentor sports programs enjoying success this year, one can't help but name the girls' soccer team to the head of the pack.

Heading into Saturday's game against Walsh, the girls have compiled a 10-0-2 record, earning themselves a third place ranking in the state polls. They trail two Columbus squads that won't be seen by the Cards until at least the state semi-finals.

The team is confident in their abilities to capture the state title. "Our chances of winning the states are great," says senior Julie Gravagna, "When it's time to pull together, we pull together." Sweeper Tatum Fraser attributes the team's success to their ability to work well together equally without egos. Fraser, a four year lettermen and team captain, goes on to mention the freshmen as a huge asset.

Freshmen team members include Adrienne and Jackie Sluga, as well as starting forward Nikki Tizzano, a huge contributer to Mentor's offense. Another contributing factor is the outstanding coaching staff, headed by Mark Sattelle. "The coaches have a good knowledge of the game and give good direction," says senior goalie Kim Grano. When asked, fans were happy to give their input on the teams winning streak. Senior fan Jenn Neal says, "These girls are great, they are probably the best yet." She has been to all but two home games and continues to follow the teams lead. Great coaching, support, and most of all excellent teamwork and cooperation between the girls; all of these are the basis of a great team.

Time will tell as the girls prepare for a tough Walsh team. "If, and when we beat Walsh," says Gravagna, "we're going all the way."
