Mentor Likes The Wait
Published April 19, 2008 in News Herald

The wait for the final girls team results Friday night at the South Invitational made for some tense moments after the meet was over.
Mentor coach Brian Butler sat in the bleachers patiently waiting for good news, and just after 9 p.m., he got it.
The Cardinals won the team championship with 139 points, just enough cushion to hold off a spirited effort by runner-up Kenston, which had 126.
Stephanie Rogers (high jump), Alyssa Harker (300-meter hurdles) and Allison Cimperman (pole vault) each won meet titles, as did Mentor's 4x400 relay.
"Today was almost a non-typical Mentor," Butler said. "Usually, we're field events-heavy and then score some other points. Today, honestly you look at it, and we were pretty even across the board.
"Sprinters scored their points, distance scored their points and so did the field events. That was nice to see."
Rogers started the meet in impressive fashion, winning the high jump with a personal-best effort of 5 feet, 7 inches. The senior, who has a good shot at becoming Mentor's first state girls qualifier in the high jump since Hannah Cope in 2004, had gone 5-5 earlier in the season.
"I'm very excited," Rogers said. "I try not to think about the height too much. I just wanted to jump up. When I cleared over it, I felt pretty clean. I didn't feel myself brushing against it. When I cleared it, it felt good."
Kenston was second in the team race, riding the strength of middle distance and sprints.

Senior standout Leah Dancie won the 100 dash in 12.4 seconds, shaving 26 one-hundredths of a second off her season best coming into the meet. She also turned in a solid anchor leg on the Bombers' 4x200 relay, which won in 1:48.5.

Maygen Semall had a big day for Kenston. The promising freshman ran the anchor leg on the Bombers' winning 4x800 relay, going out strong in the first 150 meters and giving her team a win by about 80 meters in 10:02.1.
She also won the 800 in 2:26.9 and made the 4x400 relay interesting all the way down to the last 50 meters, but Harker held her off as Kenston took second.
"I think we did pretty well all together as a team," Semall said. "I ran my best. I'm kind of tired now. I wish I would have got (Harker).
"I'm proud of my team. We all ran hard."
On the boys side, Amherst won the team championship with 126 points. South, competing on its home track, was runner-up with 1171⁄2.
Kenny Stephens continued his impressive season in the jumps for the Rebels. The junior, who cleared 6-71⁄2 earlier this year, won the high jump with a personal-best effort of 6-4. He also won the long jump by clearing 20-61⁄2.
"It's always comforting knowing that bigger meets are coming and we're able to consistently get the same heights," Stephens said. "Hopefully I can come out with a 6-9. That's been my struggle so far.
"(The long jump) kind of surprised me a little bit, because I've been going low 19s. So I was really happy I could pull that out just in the nick of time, because (Bedford's Tiron Jester) had a 20-31⁄2. It helped."
The Mayfield boys took fifth with 91 points, getting first-place efforts from its 4x800 relay and Bradley Potts (800).
Potts ran the opening leg of the 4x800, which ran an 8:25.9, and was pleased with what he saw there, especially the work of third leg John Angelo, who turned in a 2:03 split to put the Wildcats firmly in control.
"It was great. We got off to an early start," Potts said. "And John Angelo, this was his first time doing that. He really came out and impressed all of us.
Other area girls champions were South's Jamie Clapacs (400) and Kathleen Prawdzik (discus), Mayfield's Stephanie Buda (1,600) and Kenston's Anna Henry (3,200).
South's Greg McCray (400), Eli Kovach (shot put) and the 4x400 relay also brought home championships on the boys side.
