Sports Update (basketball)
This year, the Mentor Cardinals play perhaps the toughest schedule of any Division 1 High School in Ohio. The Lake Erie League is rated the toughest conference in the state by a number of magazines.
In addition to 14 league games, Mentor's schedule includes games against two USA Today Top-25 teams: Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Detroit Redford. Also on the schedule is perennial powerhouse Cleveland St. Edwards, which was one of last years Division 1 state semi-finalists. In addition, this holiday season the Cardinals will travel to San Diego to play three games in the Surf & Slam Tournament, which features quality teams from California, Washington and Arizona.
This Cardinals team contains ten seniors and two juniors, many of whom have played together since grade school. Most saw significant playing time last year and gained valuable postseason experience in advancing to the regional finals. The large group of seniors will provide great leadership and also adds a degree of academic excellence to their collective resume by sporting a combined grade point average of over 3.6.

Congratulations to Eddie Zienkowski who was named the Plain Dealer Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 5, 2003. He scored 92 points in the three games in San Diego, scored 22 points in the victory over St. Edward, and had eight assists and six rebouds.
