The Mentor Cardinals visited Byers Field to face off against the St. Ignatius Wildcats ... again. The rivalry is one that should have a book written about its history. Tonight's game was another instant classic with the Cards (2-0) prevailing 37-33. A relatively calm first half had the Wildcats up 9-7. Then the 3rd quarter brought out all the scoring with the Wildcats scoring 21 points while the Cards racked up 15 points. Alex Matthews ran for 2 scores for the Cards in the 3rd along with dashing in for a 2 point conversion. The final quarter proved to be the breaking point as Mentor outscored St. Ignatius 15-3. Eddie Daugherty and Jason Blizzard each caught a 4th quarter Jake Floriea TD pass. The Mentor defense held the Wildcats at multiple key points in the game and deserve a shout out! The Cards come home next week when the Euclid Panthers visit the JTO. C'mon out to see the new field turf and to catch the action of the 2014 Mentor Cardinals. GO CARDS! by Mr. Pat Leber

The Mentor Cardinals made their first visit to the University of Akron stadium a memorable one by defeating the St. Edwards Eagles 41-38 in the state semi-final game. The game was back and forth all night unlike last year's playoff game when the Cards had to score the final 28 points of the game to win 63-56. The Card's (13-1) rolled up 641 total yards tonight and built on this all evening with 98, 143, 184 & 216 yards in each of the 4 respective quarters. The Cardinal defense held when they had to and the offense would respond with a scoring threat. Conner Krizancic lead the way completing 25 of 40 passes for 353 yards including 2 TD's. He also was the Cardinal leading ground gainer with 28 carries for 129 yards. Eddie Daugherty added 113 yards on the ground with only 10 carries for an 11.3 yard average! Alex Mathews ran for some hard earned yardage with his 5 carries and 46 yards. Brandon Fritts lead the receivers in yardage with 9 catches for 178 yards including some spectacular snags. Daugherty had 10 catches for 86 yards adding to his team lead in receptions this season (now at 82). One more win for the title! The Cards will take on the Archbishop (Cincinnati) Moeller Crusaders (13-1) next Saturday for the state title. The game will be on TV but you really need to grab a friend and join us there in person to help bring home a state football championship. Rumor has it that it may be a late afternoon game so stay tuned for those details. GO CARDS!
