The Mentor Cardinal football team reached the state final game but came up short to Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 55-52. The Cards got behind 13-0 and played catch up all game. The see-saw battle netted Mentor 586 total yards to Moeller's 548. Individually, the Cards Conner Krizancic ran for 101 yards & 3 TD's while completing 35 of 54 passes for 411 yards for 2 TD's. Eddie Daugherty caught an amazing 18 receptions for 177 yards (2 TD's) followed by Brandon Fritts with 9 grabs for 111 yards. Daugherty also threw a 44 yard TD to Corey Plavcan making Daugherty 4 of 4 on the season and all 4 tosses were for TD's! The Cardinal seniors just ended their high school careers with a 43-9 record over 4 years!. Thank you to the Mentor strong who came out in droves to support the 2013 team. The size of the Mentor crowd was very noticeable and the 13-2 Mentor Cardinal football team thanks you for the outstanding support. GO CARDS!

The Mentor Cardinals made their first visit to the University of Akron stadium a memorable one by defeating the St. Edwards Eagles 41-38 in the state semi-final game. The game was back and forth all night unlike last year's playoff game when the Cards had to score the final 28 points of the game to win 63-56. The Card's (13-1) rolled up 641 total yards tonight and built on this all evening with 98, 143, 184 & 216 yards in each of the 4 respective quarters. The Cardinal defense held when they had to and the offense would respond with a scoring threat. Conner Krizancic lead the way completing 25 of 40 passes for 353 yards including 2 TD's. He also was the Cardinal leading ground gainer with 28 carries for 129 yards. Eddie Daugherty added 113 yards on the ground with only 10 carries for an 11.3 yard average! Alex Mathews ran for some hard earned yardage with his 5 carries and 46 yards. Brandon Fritts lead the receivers in yardage with 9 catches for 178 yards including some spectacular snags. Daugherty had 10 catches for 86 yards adding to his team lead in receptions this season (now at 82). One more win for the title! The Cards will take on the Archbishop (Cincinnati) Moeller Crusaders (13-1) next Saturday for the state title. The game will be on TV but you really need to grab a friend and join us there in person to help bring home a state football championship. Rumor has it that it may be a late afternoon game so stay tuned for those details. GO CARDS!

The Mentor Cardinals snow shoed a victory over St. Ignatius 26-3 for their third playoff win this season. The defense was the shining star as they held the Wildcats to only 126 total yards (63 by air & 63 by ground). The defense has now given up only 3 total points in 3 playoff games!!! After the Wildcats started the scoring with a field goal, Mentor ran off the next 26 points. Mentor's scoring started with a safety by J.D. Matsko in the second quarter. Then Mike Muzic kicked a 22 yard field goal followed by an Eddie Daugherty to Corey Plavcan 41 yard TD strike. Muzic kicked his second and third field goals of the night (34 and 25 yards). The final score was a Conner Krizancic to Brandon Fritts 28 yard TD. The Cards will now take on the St. Edwards Eagles in the state semi-final game next Saturday, November 30th. The Mentor Cardinals dominated the Stow-Monroe Falls Bulldogs by cruising to a 43-0 win in a 2nd round playoff match. The Cards started the scoring early while the defense completed their 5th shutout this season along with their second shutout in a row! Conner Krizancic ran for 3 scores and caught a 10 yard TD thrown by Eddie Daugherty. Krizancic also hit Brandon Fritts for a 30 yard score just before half giving the Cards an overwhelming 40-0 halftime lead. Mike Muzic sealed the victory with a 27 yard FG in the 3rd quarter rounding out the final score at 43-0. The 11-1 Cardinals now take on St. Ignatius on Saturday, November 23rd. It will be a rematch of the earlier regular season game where the Wildcats beat Mentor 26-6. Stay tuned for ticket information. GO CARDS!

The 2013 football playoffs started for the Mentor Cardinals with a rematch against the Brunswick Blue Devils. The results were nearly the same as before with the Cardinals shutting out Brunswick 42-0 tonight raising their record to 10-1. The win means we move on to play the Stow/Munroe Falls Bulldogs next weekend. Connor Krizancic had a hand in every score as he ran for 3 TD's (3, 12 & 11 yards) and threw for 3 scores to Brandon Fritts (8 & 12 yards) and Corey Plavcan for a 20 yard TD. Mike Muzic was perfect with 6 extra points. STAT OF THE NIGHT: The win raises our home record to 43-4 since the JTO invested in the new field at the start of the 2006 season! Mentor has now outscored Brunswick in two games this year 87-3 and have outgained them 873-354. Stay tuned for details on next week's playoff game to be played at a neutral site. GO CARDS!

The Mentor Cardinals traveled to Strongsville to take on the Mustangs in the final regular season game of the year. The muddy field didn't slow down the Cards (in the second half) from pulling out a 45-19 victory completing a 9-1 regular season record. The game started slow as the halftime score would indicate with it knotted at 19 going into the locker room. Then something changed in the air as the Cardinals scored 26 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter to put the game out of reach. The scoring began with a perfectly placed pass from Conner Krizancic to Brandon Fritts for 68 yards on the first offensive play of the game for the Cards. Alex Mathews then scored on a 3 yard run followed by another Krizancic TD toss but this time to Eddie Daugherty for 15 yards. The second half scoring was all Mentor as Krizancic ran a 25 yard TD followed by 2 more TD passes to Daugherty (15 yards) and Corey Plavcan (15 yards). Mathews ended the 3rd quarter with his second TD run but this time for 7 yards. STAT OF THE GAME: The Cardinal defense held Strongsville to only 54 yards for the entire second half! That a way "D". The Mentor Cardinals invited Hudson to Mentor to see if they would share some of their computer points ... and the Explorers obliged. Mentor defeated Hudson 38-14 to hand the Explorers their first loss on the season giving both teams an identical record at 8-1. Hudson threw away a golden chance to score first when a TD was called back due to a penalty to start the game. After that, it was all Mentor. Alex Mathews started the scoring with his 1 yard TD run. Conner Krizancic then hit Eddie Daugherty for a 26 yard TD. Next, Krizancic found Justin Fritts for a 59 yard score. Krizancic then ran it in himself on a 7 yard TD giving the Cards a 28-7 halftime lead. Mike Muzic then added a nice 37 yard field goal (4 for 4 this season) followed by Alex Mathews second score on the night. STAT OF THE NIGHT: Mentor has now scored at least 35 points for 7 straight games! Join us next week when the Cards visit Strongsville to end the regular season. The Mentor Cardinals visited the Solon Comets and cruised to a 35-0 victory. It was a surprising 0-0 score after the first quarter. Then Alex Mathews rumbled for an 8 yard score. Conner Krizancic followed that with a 40 yard TD run taking the 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Krizancic tossed a 24 yard TD to Corey Plavcan and then a 90 yard TD to Brandon Fritts. The final score was another Krizancic TD strike but this time to Jake Berardinelli for 12 yards. STAT OF THE NIGHT: The Cardinal defense held Solon to 1 of 15 on 3rd down conversions! With fall settling in, the Mentor Cardinals decided to open up the recipe book and cook some Blue Devil Stew. Brunswick visited the JTO and could only put up a field goal in the Mentor 45-3 victory. Conner Krizancic scored twice in the 1st quarter on runs of 1 and 9 yards. Krizancic also threw 3 TD's on the evening with 2 to Brandon Fritts and 1 to Corey Plavcan. Matt Eiswerth scored the final TD on a 3 yard run while Mike Muzic connected on 6 extra points and added a 34 yard field goal. The Cards put up 470 yards of offense while holding Brunswick to only 200 yards. Stat of the Night: The Cards are now 41-4 at Jerome T Osborne Sr. Stadium since the renovations were completed prior to the 2006 season! The football Cardinals invited Shaker Heights to Mentor for a Friday night homecoming and we're glad they showed up for the big dance. The Cards (5-1) got off to a quick start and cruised to a 56-14 win. Conner Krizancic started the scoring with a 19 yard scamper. He followed that with a 39 yard TD toss to Corey Plavcan and then to Eddie Daugherty for 22 yards. The Cards ended the first quarter with a blocked punt by Austin Hankins who scooped up the ball and ran 5 yards for the score. Krizancic scored again on a 15 yard run followed by a Daugherty 21 yard TD romp. Alex Mathews added to the scoreboard by running an 11 yard TD. Matt Eiswerth entered the game late and hit Zach Sparacia for Mentor's final score with a 35 yard TD. Mike Muzic was perfect on the evening with 8 extra points. STAT OF THE NIGHT: Mentor has scored 50+ points in 4 of their last 9 nine games dating back to the wild playoff run last year. The Cards remain at home next week to face Brunswick on Friday, October 11th at 7:00 p.m. We'll see you there. GO CARDS!!!
