AP EXAM

The Advanced Placement Biology Exam is taken in mid to late May for a cost of approximately $75.  The test is scored on a 5-4-3-2-1 scale.  Statistically, students who score a 5 or a 4 on the exam, would receive a grade of A for an equivalent introductory course at the collegiate level.  A student who earns a 3 would usually receive a grade of B.  Generally, students who receive scores of 5, 4 or 3, are given credits by the university or college of their choice based on the quality of the score they have received.  The higher the score, the more credits are rewarded to the student.  Ultimately, this will enable the student to begin taking biology courses of their choosing beginning at the 200 or sophomore level and may enable the student to graduate earlier depending upon the number of credits the university or college has rewarded for all AP tests passed during the student's secondary career.  Some students from Mentor High School have entered college as either a second semester freshman, a sophomore or in some rare cases a junior.  Also, be aware that private institutions tend to be more discriminating about the quality of the AP exam score and may not award credit unless the student has scored a 5 on the exam.  Parents and students should always check with prospective universities about the type of AP score they will accept for credit before signing up for the exam.

The following chart is a summary of annual student scores on the AP Biology Exam from the inception of the course in 1991.  Many of these students have successfully gone onto medical degree programs throughout the United States.  We would strongly encourage students, who have a keen interest in the biological or medical sciences, to take this course.  Many former students of this course have found themselves tutoring their colleagues in various collegiate biology classes.
