The Top 25
is a select group of students from the Vocal Music Department at Mentor High School in Mentor Ohio.
The singers are chosen for their singing and performance ability. They present a program of show tunes,
popular music, and contemporary songs. The Top 25 presents its varied style of music with staging
routines and sketches. The show is a continuous series of music as only young people can perform.
The group is often supplemented by a small group of instrumentalists. After nineteen years of
performing, The Top 25 has become quite popular in the northeastern section of Ohio. The singers
present programs for clubs, banquets, church organizations, conventions, and schools in the Cleveland
area. In the spring of 1973, the group was invited to Washington D.C. where they performed at a
party honoring Don Shula, for the National Press Club, on the steps of the Capitol, and at
the Soldiers and Sailors Home. The Top 25 has also sung for the Variety Club Telethon on Channel WUAB
in Cleveland. The Top 25 has
traveled to Atlanta, Georgia in 1975 where they performed for the International Kiwanis Convention.
During the same year, the Mentor Singers were awarded first place for their commercial arrangement
of the Ohio Savings and Loan Tune which was then broadcast allover the Northern part of Ohio.
In June 1976, the Top 25 performed and presented a learning session at the State Convention of the
American Choral Directors Association.
The Top 25 sang for the Ohio Music Educators' State Convention
in February of 1977 and again in 1985. The group traveled to Mexico in the summer of 1977 where they
participated in an International Music Festival. While in Mexico, the Top 25 performed in Joiutla,
Oaxtepec Theater, The National Cathedral, and The National Art Gallery. The final performance was
in Chapultepec Park where the young singers entertained over 7,000 enthusiastic Mexicans.
The Top 25 traveled to Europe during the summer of 1978 and 1981. The singers performed In England,
France, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, and West Germany. Mentor's Top 25 has also
presented shows for Fred Waring and the Warlnew Summer Workshops in 1977 and 1979. In the summer of
1980, Mentor's Top 25 participated in the International HawaiianFestival. During the summer of 1982,
the Top 25 toured the East coast of the United States singing in Philadelphia, Washington D.C.,
Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia. the Scandinavian people of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway honored the
Top 25 on their 1983 tour performances with large enthusiastic crowds. In 1984 the Top 25 traveled
to Canada performing in Ottowa, Montreal, Toronto, and Quebec. Last summer the group touted the
southern portion of England and were honored to present a program for the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth
and his honored guests. The Top 25 also performed on the BBC radio shows originating from Bristol and
presented a program in Royal Festival Hall in London.
